Barbra Streisand has been named the 59th recipient of the SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award — the guild’s top honor for actors who exemplify the finest ideals of the profession.
Streisand’s career, spanning theater, film, television and music, has earned her a place among entertainment’s most celebrated artists.
She is one of the rare EGOT winners and the holder of many lifetime honors, including Kennedy Center recognition, the Cecil B. DeMille Award and the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award.
Her trophy case includes two Academy Awards, 10 Grammys (with special Grammy Legend and Lifetime Achievement distinctions), five Emmys, three Peabodys and a Tony.
Streisand broke new ground behind the camera with Yentl (1983), becoming the first woman to write, produce, direct and star in a major studio film — a picture that brought her multiple Academy Award nominations.
Her later directorial work, The Prince of Tides, earned seven Oscar nominations, while The Mirror Has Two Faces received two Academy nods.
Earlier in her career she rose to prominence on Broadway with I Can Get It for You Wholesale (1962) and went on to create iconic screen roles in Funny Girl, A Star Is Born, The Way We Were, Hello, Dolly! and Nuts.
She made history as the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Evergreen,” written for the 1977 A Star Is Born.
Reflecting on the honor, Streisand recalled: “Ever since I was a young girl sitting in the Loew’s Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, I dreamed of being one of those actresses I saw on the screen... this award is especially meaningful to me because it comes from my fellow actors.”
SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher praised Streisand as an “unparalleled talent,” noting her ability to connect with audiences and to evolve across a long, industrious career.
